SJBS Faculty and Staff

 Fr. William Spong

Although Fr. Spong grew up in the greater Rochester area, his priestly vocation took him to the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas, where he was ordained and served for many years as a priest and pastor. Father recently retired and returned to the Rochester area to be close to his family. He has been our spiritual guide since our first year, coming to the school to hear confessions and celebrate Mass each week.

 

 

Miss Colleen Richards

Miss Richards earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Canisius College, a Master’s Degree from the University of Phoenix in Curriculum and Instruction, and has New York State Teacher Certification. She has taught for sixteen years in a variety of grade levels and subject areas. Miss Richards is the Headmaster of St. John Bosco School and Chesterton Academy of Rochester.

 

 

Mrs. Sue Giovenco

Mrs. Giovenco earned a Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Brockport, a Master’s Degree in Education from Nazareth College, and has New York State Teacher Certification. She taught for ten years at St. Mary’s in Canandaigua and has worked in education and child care for an additional eleven years. Mrs. Giovenco teaches children in Pre-Kindergarten, "The Fairy Tale Year."

 

 

Mrs. Kelly Gotham

Mrs. Gotham earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Dayton, a Master's Degree from Roberts Wesleyan College and has New York State Teacher Certification.  She taught Preschool and Kindergarten for a total of 26 years at Catholic schools.  Mrs. Gotham teaches children in Kindergarten, "The Cradle of Civilization Year."  

 

  

Mrs. Susan Mattina  

Mrs. Mattina earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the State University College at Buffalo, and she has New York State Teacher Certification. She has earned tenure in two public school districts and has Special Education experience as well. Mrs. Mattina teaches first grade, "The Greek Year."

 

 

Mrs. Renee Mills

Mrs. Mills earned her Bachelor's Degree from Buffalo State College. She home schooled her oldest son, through high school, using Seton curriculum. She fell in love with classic literature. She has taught religious education at several grade levels. She has a deep passion for her Catholic Faith. This is her first year as a full time second grade teacher and she is enjoying the challenge.  Mrs. Mills teaches children in second grade, "The Roman Year."

 

 

Mr. Robert Pokalsky  

Mr. Pokalsky earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville and a Master’s Degree from Excelsior College with New York Teacher Certification. He has been teaching for 21 years. Mr. Pokalsky teaches children in third grade, "The Medieval Year."

 

 

Mrs. Laurie Collins

Mrs. Collins earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Rochester and a Master's Degree from Nazareth College, and she has New York State Teacher Certification. She has teaching experience in Special Education, elementary school, and homeschooling.  Mrs. Collins teaches the fourth grade "The Modern Year."

 

 

Miss Margaret Zelinka

Miss Zelinka earned a Bachelor's Degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Middle Childhood Education and also has a teacher's license in Middle Childhood Education, Language Arts and Social Studies, with a Reading Endorsement.  Miss Zelinka teaches our fifth graders in "The American Year."

 

 

Mrs. Sandy Giannavola

Mrs. Giannavola earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from SUNY Brockport. She has taught Math at SUNY Brockport and at the high school level. Mrs. Giannavola teaches grade level and advanced level math courses to our middle scholars.  

 

 

Mr. Richard Kunz  

Mr. Kunz earned both Bachelor’s and Master of Divinity Degrees from St. Bernard’s Seminary, and he has teacher certifications in Latin, Spanish and Drivers’ Ed. He has 25 years of teaching experience plus broad experience in pastoral work and business. Mr. Kunz teaches Latin to all students in grades 1-8, and teaches our hands-on nature studies science program to middle scholars.

 

 

Ms. Karen Stevens

Ms. Stevens earned both her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and completed half her Master of Science in Education course work from St. John Fisher College.  She has New York State certification in ELA 7-12.  In addition to administration and business experience, Ms. Stevens has taught high school in Watkins Glen, NY as well as New York City.  She is a Third Order Carmelite.  Ms. Stevens teaches writing, literature and history to our middle scholars.



 

Fr. Joseph DeMaio, O.Carm.

Fr. DeMaio has spent his entire priestly ministry primarily in Catholic education.  For over 45 years he has served as a teacher, administrator, counselor, and chaplain.  He received his BA in Philosophy from St. Bonaventure University, an STB in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and an MA in foreign and comparative literature from the University of Rochester.  He is a New York State certified teacher for grades 7-12.



Mr. David Klosterman

Mr. Klosterman earned his Bachelor's Degree from Christendom College where he studied Classics, Early Christian Studies and Math.  A trained vocalist, Mr. Klosterman teaches Music, Latin, Math, and Physical Education.

 

 

Miss Mary Catherine Pietropaoli

Miss Pietropaoli earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Providence College. She has an extensive background in classical education. Miss Pietropaoli teaches Literature, Writing, History and Religion classes in the middle school and high school.

 

 

Fr. Michael Copenhagen 

Fr. Copenhagen earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Scranton and a Bachelor’s of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He has taught history and fourth grade and also has experience working with missionaries and with U.S. Representatives in Congress. Mr. Copenhagen teaches middle and high school students in Philosophy, History, Math and Science.

 

 

Mr. Darrell Rimbert

Mr. Darrell Rimbert earned a Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Potsdam in Mathematics and Physics and afterward studied spirituality, philosophy, and theology at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, NE.  His teaching experience includes teaching in the BSA, tutoring in college, and formal catechesis at the parish level while in the seminary.  Mr. Rimbert primarily teaches mathematics and science courses, predominantly at the high school level.

 

 

 

Mr. Kurt Griffen

Mr. Kurt Griffen began directing the Chesterton Academy Choir in December of 2015.  In 2016-17 he added the 6-8 choirs, plus theology and history classes.  Mr. Griffen converted to the Church on All Saints' Day, 2002, by reading Church history and especially reading G.K. Chesterton.  He has studied in the Holy Land, been to England on a "Chesterton Pilgrimage", and studied opera in Spoleto, Italy twice.  He is married to his first wife (also a convert). They have three children.

 

 

Mrs. Susan Jenkins

Mrs. Jenkins earned her Bachelor's degree in Studio Art from Nazareth College.  She has developed curriculum, provided artistic instruction and college portfolio consultation to students grades K-12 for over 15 years in public, private, and homeschool settings.  Mrs. Jenkins provides Art curriculum and instruction that integrates to the subject matter being taught each year.  Her portfolio can be viewed at www.susanjenkinsgallery.com.

 

 

Mr. John Marchand

Mr. Marchand is one of the original 12 founding SJBS families and currently serves as our Athletics Director and Assistant to the Headmaster. He teaches Physical Education to all grade levels and coaches the Chesterton Academy High School boys basketball team as well as the SJBS girls 7/8 modified basketball team.

 

 

      

        Mrs. Carolyn Hanna

As the Office Administrator, Mrs. Hanna keeps things running smoothly. In addition to the wonderful work she does in the office, Mrs. Hanna is also a NYS certified Emergency Medical Technician and works part-time as a medic and instructor for Perinton Ambulance.  She is one of the original 12 founding SJBS families and is a second mom to every child at SJBS!

 

Mrs. Sue Monczynski

Mrs. Monczynski, RN heads up our newly added Health Office and also serves as our lunch and recess coordinator.  She entertains students of all ages with new and exciting games at recess. Mrs. Monczynski also supports the main office as an administrative assistant.

 

 

Mrs. Mary Kosinski

Mrs. Kosinski earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Scranton.  She has taught preschool at SJBS and currently helps as a teacher's aide in PreK.  Mrs. Kosinski also helps out in the office!
